Mounted Games

Mounted Games is for all ages within the pony club and is an excellent introduction to younger members who gain confidence and control of their ponies while having fun. As members acquire skills and confidence they receive specialised training to improve their games skills.

Mounted Games Competitions

Training is weekly from April to August inclusive. Details will appear in the most recent schedule. You book in the normal fashion with the organiser of the rally/competition.

There are three age categories: Under 10, Junior (U13) and Senior (U16). KHPC Mounted Games Training commences in early April and continues weekly throughout the summer in Punchestown. Teams compete at various competitions throughout the country during June, July and August. U10s and Juniors compete to reach the Irish Pony Club Championships (usually the end of July). Kildare is part of Area 2 and our Mounted Games Qualifier for U10s and Juniors is at Stradbally at the beginning of July. Seniors go through a series of four qualifiers for a place at the final in the RDS. There are also Pairs competitions for riders over 13 and under 21 years.

The Irish Pony Club provide opportunities for successful riders to represent Ireland abroad by attending trials in January every year. Many KHPC members have travelled to Royal Windsor Horse Show, Royal Bath and West Show, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each year. The Irish Pony Club host an international competition in October at the Curragh and teams from England, Scotland and Wales compete with Ireland at Junior and Senior level. This event wraps up the Mounted Games season.

Mounted Games Highlights 2019/2020

  • Seniors qualified for and WON the RDS Senior Championship. First time for Kildare to win since 1977.
  • Two KHPC Seniors and one Junior played on Irish Pony Club teams in the UK.
  • Juniors were 4th & 7th at the IPC Championships.
  • U10s won the B final at the IPC Championships and played in every competition during the year.
  • Most importantly, fun was had by all who tried Mounted Games.

The famine is over! After the delight of even qualifying and coming 3rd in 2018, it was an outright amazing achievement for the Senior Mounted Games Team in 2019 to win the coveted Leonard Cup at the RDS. They won the Saturday heats and headed into the final on Sunday 13th August with a 10 point lead. The team of Ali McPhillips on Amber; Isabel Donnelly on Midnight; Josh Hickey on Missy; Louis Hennessy on Jake and Jake Branagan on Jamie were confidently and calmly led by their world class trainer, Peter McCarthy, himself a former KHPC Member and RDS challenger in 2011-2014. The coveted prize that eluded Peter as a player was rewarded to him as an amazing trainer. Although the lead closed to within four points, they didn’t succumb to the pressure and managed to pull off the momentous win. The last time Kildare won at the RDS was 1977. We are honoured to have Muriel Shackleton (trainer 1975 & 1977), Liam Walsh, Sylvia, Joan Clarke (team 1975), Martin Clarke (1977), Anna Merveldt and Stella Powell members of the winning teams from 1975 and 1977 at our Awards night in 2019.

We were lucky to have two Junior and two Under 10 teams at the IPC Championships in Barnadown. The KHPC Junior teams played superbly – many of them on new ponies to secure a 4th and 7th place in the finals. The girl’s team of Lucy Hennessy, Alice O’Sullivan, Eliza Jane Queally, Alex Connors and Libby Beirne were super and the boys team of Jack Galway, Ben Connors, Aron Reid, Nicky Bolton and Phonsie Wardell were amazing. The comraderie and co-operation and team sharing meant that all had a wonderful “long” day of games.

There were two U10 teams also played brilliantly. The under 10 white team of Max Galway, Marina Bolton, Phonsie Wardell, Nicky Bolton, and Adam Beirne were 5th in a very competitive A Final. Charlotte Weld, Jack Beirne, Eliza Wardell, Gloria Queally, Georgia Queally were the younger bibs team who also had great fun and came 5th in the B final.

Kildare Mounted Games Teams also competed at the International IPC Competition at Punchestown in October with the senior team coming 1st in the B final; at the National Ploughing Championships in Carlow in September and at all mounted games competitions during the year around the country.

Training will resume once it is safe to do so and new members are always welcome in all age categories. Training generally takes place once a week until September in Punchestown. Come and give it a go! Fun is guaranteed
